On a long journey

One thing is crystal clear to 16-year-old Tim Klark: he wants to go to sea. On February 26, 1987, the determined, hard-working boy introduces himself to the German shipping company. Cramming, swotting, and exhausting voyages in international maritime traffic await him.

Tim leaves behind his life in a nice neighborhood and his sheltered home in the GDR. During his four weeks on the «Wilhelm Pieck,» he has to deal with seasickness, harsh tones, long nights, and hard work. His second voyage on the «MS Erfurt» also presents a number of challenges. Anyone who questions socialist state doctrines will never leave the ship again or will find themselves in prison. Can Tim remain true to his good heart unscathed? And what awaits him when he returns home?
