This is a mystery thriller full of intrigue and unexpected truths. A Famous actress posing as a woman called Mrs Smith, seeks the help of Miss Silver, the genteel detective featured in many of Patricia Wentworth's crime novels. She has sought help because she believes that her life is in danger. It is not long before Miss Silver discovers that Mrs Smith is not who she claims to be, but is indeed in danger.
