The ghost grinned as I hoisted the backpack over my shoulders. “Ah, two firm friends, reunited at last! There should be sweet violin music playing for us, but I’ll settle for the screams of the dying.”
“Oh, Luce. That was a missed opportunity. Didn’t you sniff it? They’ve got a very distinctive aroma, like burned toast and caramel.”
“No, as it happens I didn’t take time out to taste his cigarette smoke, George. I was too busy trying to avoid being killed.”
“...You want some orange juice, Lucy? It’s your favorite: the kind with pulp.”
“Lucy doesn’t like orange juice with pulp,” George said. “Remember?”
“Oh, yes, that’s right. It gets caught between your teeth, doesn’t it?”

The skull’s voice echoed in my mind: ‘If you’re looking

“I think I see it. We’re in line to get to you.”
“What, are you queuing now? Just how British are you people? Don’t just stand in line! Kill somebody!”
She had hair like bleached straw, bone-white skin, and a slow, faint way of talking that made you lean ever closer to her in an effort to catch what she said. When you realized it wasn’t worth listening to, you leaned slowly back again and, if possible, continued in the same direction until you’d left the room.
