Prologue
A long time ago it was rumored that there was a forest assistant among people on Russian lands. There lived that mysterious friend among the forests and wild animals, and his name was Forest’s Spirit. He often helped to local inhabitants when it was very difficult for them. Some people managed to meet him and all them Forest Spirit came to help. Don’t remember all the stories, but some have come down to our days. At that time, life on long lands was not easy. Nature and life were harsh to people. The forests were impassable in winter nor in summer. A famine often came to the lands. The people were gathering their last strength to take care of the lands and to sow a harvest! At this times, it was necessary to get food for your family and to help others. People had difficult years when they went to work leaving their homes and relatives. There were not enough doctors in the cities to help the elderly. Churches were often empty and a clergy lacked parishioners. Even among vendors, there were not enough people and connections to provide for the state treasury. But the common people have always learned to put up with troubles and patiently wait for better times.
Part 1. The histories about Forest’s Spirit
Chapter 1. Forest Spirit and the young Cossack
In a nearby village there lived a boy named Grishka. There were many brothers in his family and he was the youngest. Since childhood, Grishka always wanted to go to work, but since he was the smallest, he was entrusted only with household chores. Grishka’s father completed military service and sent all his older sons to the army. One morning father sent Grishka on his horse to the city. On the way through a forest, the young Cossack noticed a forest harelet who wanted to cross a road. Grishka pulled on the reins and slowed got down the horse. The little hare, noticing the straggler rider immediately went to the other side of the road. Grishka decided to accompany the harelet until he hided into the forest. But the little hare sat down by the side of the road and began to look in straight of the good traveler. Suddenly a light breeze blew and Grishka heard a voice that thanked him. The young Cossack got down his horse and looked around, but he didn’t see nobody. He asked who was talking to him and asked to come out and show himself to him. To this, after a new whiff, a voice of forest replied that he was looking right at him. Grishka looked around and again saw a little hare who was staring fixedly right at him. The voice introduced itself as the protector of all animals. His task is to protect the animals that are lost in the forest. Also, the voice added that people gave him the nickname Forest Voice. After that, Grishka remembered the children’s conversations with the village old men, who sometimes mentioned the mysterious Forest Spirit. He often came to ordinary people, helping them find their way in life. Grishka, in response to the words of gratitude, said that it cost him nothing to help the forest hare. Then Forest Voice asked if he could help in any way. The young Cossack told Forest’s Spirit of his a sad destiny and said that his way lies to the city far from the village. Grishka thanked the mysterious friend again, then climbed on his horse and headed the city side. On the way to the city, a young Cossack remembered a mysterious friend, looking back at the winter forest, and birds flying past the road. Following through the city square among the crowd, he noticed a lonely old woman, in her hands she had a basket with puppies. An old woman asked people to pick up puppies for free. When Grishka approached the woman, there was only one puppy left in the basket. He was the most inconspicuous, gray color without bright spots. Suddenly the puppy woke up and looked at the young Cossack. His gaze reminded Grishka about Forest’s Spirit. The puppy affably reached out to the Cossack. Grishka, without hesitation, decided to take the puppy for himself. After walking a little across the square, he heard a familiar voice. Forest Spirit greeted an old acquaintance again and said that there was a request for him. Grishka was very surprised and listened attentively to the mysterious friend. Forest Voice said that a little girl lives in the city and she will be very glad to have a new fluffy friend. Grishka very willingly decided to help put the puppy in good hands. They came to the church parish, a girl was walking next to the library, she was helping the ministers to bring books. Grishka asked the attendants what had happened, they said about the recent fire on the library roof. Their town is small and there has never been the firefighters. All the books were miraculously saved and now, after repairs and the help of parishioners, the library was almost completely restored. The mentor of the church noticed Grishka and the puppy and said that one girl had recently asked for a puppy. The priest also added that after the fire it is necessary to please the children with at least something. Grishka decided to offer his help. On such a proposal, Grishka’s mentor suggested creating a fire patrol. He just recently spoke with the Governor of city after the fire that it would be calmer for the residents of the city with the firefighters.
Chapter 2. Desert Spirit and the Vendor
In the east, among the green foothills in the hamlet, there lived a very kind old man. The old man’s name was Hassan, his family always supported him. He lived a good honest life and everyone loved him and knew him as a good person. When Hassan got old, he began to be sad that his children would not get a rich inheritance after him. Old man worked hard all his life and decided to find a way to help his family find prosperity. At first, he tried to start a large household of domestic birds and animals. But he realized that his strength was no longer the same and he alone could not master such work. And one day, Hassan decided, while he could still hear and see, to go to the neighboring rich lands. And so, wandering along a long road in the empty lands, Hassan came across a shady gorge. There were animals around, and he decided to take a break from the hard way too. Hassan napping woke up from a scream suddenly. He looked around and saw a small camel, its hoof clamped between slippery stones in a stream. Hassan helped the little camel, and he went towards a thicket. A cool breeze suddenly blew and Desert Voice was heard thanking him for his help. This is how Hassan met the Desert Spirit for the first time. When Hassan heard the voice, he thought it was a sign from above for him, and he decided to shelter a little camel. Hassan thought that when the little camel grows up, he could help the old man transport goods to neighboring lands. Then Hassan returned home and his family was very happy. All together they began to take care of the little camel, and when he grew up, Hassan began to go for goods in rich lands. The old man’s wealth began to grow and he remembered about the mysterious voice that he heard in the gorge. One day, when Hassan was walking with a camel near a familiar stream, he again heard the voice of desert. Hassan was delighted and offered his help, in response, Desert Voice directed the old man towards a stream. Hassan saw a blockage of stones that blocked the water. The old man began to clear the blockage so that the animals could continue to drink water in hot lands. Among the small stones, the last fragment was very large and heavy. Hassan decided to tie a rope around him and move him and the camel to the side. To Hassan’s surprise, the camel coped with the rock very easily, and seemed to rejoice with the owner. After the water returned to the gorge, Forest Voice thanked Hassan and the camel for their help. And since then, Hassan has always come to the aid of others when walking through a familiar gorge.
