Эта книга очень неординарна по своей структуре: здесь представлены и британский, и американский варианты диалогов на русском языке, поэтому, кроме всего прочего, учащиеся смогут почувствовать разницу между британским и американским вариантами английского языка. Можно согласиться с автором этой книги, который заметил ниже, что «…хотя англичане и американцы говорят на одном языке, они это делают совершенно по-разному»

A few words from the author

This book consists of 33 dialogues presented in Russian, in British English and in American English and of words to translate the Russian options into English. Primarily there were only texts in Russian and words for translation in the book, that was it, but I understood in that shape and size the book was not very popular, so I decided to add a translation into English for each dialogue. So I translated all the 33 texts into English. That seemed like a bit better. But I remembered there were a lot of books and manuals and textbooks made on that scheme already. It would be better to change the structure a little bit, I thought. So I decided to give each dialogue in three variants: In Russian, in English, and in American English. I’m not sure whether it’s the first time or not the first time that British and American branches are represented in one book but I didn’t have a chance so far to come across that kind of book, anyway. To implement that idea, I sent my translations to a friend of mine, a young Brit Vanessa Heathcock and asked her to convert the texts into British English and then I sent the same translations to my American friends, Stephen Mountman and Barbara Tylor, and asked them to convert the texts into American English and they all did that and I appreciate their help very much.

Reading a new version of the book is a captivating pastime, because though on the one hand the Brits and Americans speak the same language, on the other they do it quite differently.

In American English:

– Excuse me, would you by any chance know how to get to the train station?

– There are nine train stations here, which one are you looking for?

– I am not exactly sure. Could you help me, by any chance, please?

– Where do you need to get to?

– Brooklyn.

– You need the 21^st street station then. You’d be better off getting there by the subway. The nearest subway station is around the corner to the right, over there.

– Thank you very much!

– Have a safe trip!

In American English:

– Excuse me, do you know where the nearest drugstore around here is?

– Over there. Better on foot. It’s not too far, within walking distance. About fifteen minutes or so from here. Go straight down this street here and when you get to that high-rise building over there, take a right.

– Thank you very much!

– You’re welcome.

Где здесь плавательный бассейн?

– Извините! Здесь где-то плавательный бассейн должен быть, вы не знаете?

– Здесь два плавательных бассейна: один по этой улице, примерно с полмили, второй вот по этой улице, примерно на таком же расстоянии. Первый бассейн длиной двести футов, и там, говорят, вода морская, и там народу немного, но он дорогой. А вот тот, что по этой улице, он в длину там дорожки по сто футов, там всегда много купальщиков – в основном это подростки – и он намного дешевле. Там и аквапарк есть, но туда вход отдельный.

– Спасибо большое!

– Пожалуйста.

– Actually there are two swimming pools around here: one is over there, along this street, it’s about half a mile, I think, and the other one is over there, go along that street, again it’s about half a mile walk. The first one has swimming paths two hundred feet long and they say that the water in the pools is real sea water. There aren’t many swimmers there and it’s very expensive. The other one over there along that street has swimming paths a hundred feet long, it’s always crowded, mainly by teenagers, but it’s much cheaper. There is a water park there as well, but then you have to go through a different entrance.

– Thank you very much!

– You’re welcome.

In American English:

– Excuse me! I thought that there was a swimming pool around here somewhere. Would you happen to know where, exactly?

– Actually there are two swimming pools around here: one is over there, along this street, maybe about half a mile from here or so, and the other one is down that street over there, again about half a mile, something like that. The first one is two hundred feet long and has actual salt water in it. There are not many people there and it’s very expensive. The other one over there along that street is a hundred feet long, and it’s always crowded. It is mainly teenagers there but it’s much cheaper though. There is a water park there as well, but through separate entrance.

– Thank you very much!

– You’re welcome.

– А как доехать до вокзала Пенн?

– На подземке. Выходить вам нужно на станции «вокзал Ренн».

– I was told that there’s a bus which goes to that area from Perry.

– Yes, you can go there by bus too, again from Penn Station. It stops right next to the Museum which is very convenient.

– So, how can I get to the Station?

– By the Underground. You have to get off at Penn Station.

– Thank you very much!

– Happy journey.

In American English:

– Excuse me!

– Yes?

– I would like to go to Byer’s field. Do you know how to get there? Today is the anniversary of the Battle of the Alamo.

– A-a, yes. You can get there by train from Penn Station. There is a direct train to the Alameda station but the train only goes there twice a day, in the morning and in the late afternoon. You’ll also have to walk about 5 kilometers or so from the station to the museum. The bus doesn’t go there very often.

– I was told there’s a direct bus there from Perry.

– Yes, you can get there by bus also, from Penn Station. It’ll take you right to the Museum, very convenient.

– How can I get to the station?

– By subway. That’s the bus stop. You need to get off at Penn Station.
